Lamb's ear or wooly hedgenettle is a silvery-white plant covered with a soft fur-like coating. The fur coating and the shape of the leaf inspire the name; they look an feel like the ears of a sweet lamb.
In the garden, lamb's ear usually holds a decorative role. It is a great ground cover that needs little to no maintenance, and those varieties that flower attracts bees and hummingbirds.
Lambs ear is edible and medicinal. In Brazil, you might come across lambari, which is leaf of lambs ear battered and cooked. Lambs ear can be used as a bandage or on insect bites and bee stings. If you want to get really earthy and sustainable, fresh lambs ear also makes a VERY plush replacement for toilet paper.
Our favorite aspect of lambs ear, however, is its strength in emotional healing work. This soft plant is incredibly comforting but is also a very strong protector. For those of us dealing with emotional trauma, lambs ear can be a great tool. In a moment of panic or stress, taking a moment time to pet the leaf of the lambs ear and connect to its strength is a great way to ground yourself.
The lamb's ear we sell at Maude's was harvested from our medicinal garden and dried by our green witch. Our garden does not use chemicals of any kind. We feel very confident eating and drinking food made with herbs pulled right from our garden; however legally, we must tell you it has not been approved by any sort of government entity for human consumption.
